What’s Black Friday?
Black Friday is an indication of the holiday season coming up.
The Friday after Thanksgiving is popularly celebrated as Black Friday in the US. This year, it falls on November 29, 2024. It is considered the beginning of the shopping spree, wherein retailers shower customers with various discounts.
After the US, UK, Canada and other countries too started celebrating it as a shopping tradition. Just like Black Friday, Cyber Monday falls on the first Monday after Thanksgiving. This year, Cyber Monday falls on December 2, 2024.
Black Friday History
Ever wondered where this concept came from? These two completely unrelated terms didn’t come from a glorifying past. Black is known as a bad omen, disaster, or misfortune.
Black Friday initially used in 1869 when the US first experienced a severe financial panic spurred on by Jay Gould and James Fisk’s desire to control the gold market. Later in the 1950s, factory owners started referring to the Friday after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday.” The factory workers used to call in fake sick leaves to enjoy the long weekend holiday.
The Philadelphia police in 1961 started using the term “Black Friday,” which represented the busiest day after Thanksgiving as Christmas shopping crowded the streets.
The retailers used to operate at a loss in the non-festive season, starting from January to November; after Thanksgiving, they booked profit for the entire year.
In the mid-19th and early-20th centuries, many Santa parades sponsored by department stores, which helped advertise their stores. With time, it became an unsaid rule not to advertise or offer discounts before the parade. All the retailers start announcing huge discounts and offers after Thanksgiving, and schools and offices have holidays.
