Makeup is something that most girls learn in their teens. Not all girls are adept at applying makeup, and many don’t know when to remove it or throw it away.

That fabulous lipstick, with the proper skin-tone foundation and that smokey eye shadow effect you wear, making you look no less than a diva, might be EXPIRED!

Now, the question, “When shall I get rid of my makeup?” might be wandering around your head. If yes, you have asked the right question and found an answer for the same.

How long do makeup products last?

As someone has rightly said, “Nothing lasts forever”. So, it is with your beautifying products. Every product that you use comes with an expiry date. Yes, you read it right. All those lovely, perfectly matching skin tone products have an expiry date.

Wait! Don’t immediately run to your makeup set and spend time checking every product’s expiration date. We at Vivien Kondor have simplified it for you.

Listed below are the products and the timeline for tossing them away.

1. Eye Makeup
Eye makeup includes eyeliner, eyeshadow palette, eyeliner pencil, and mascara. Eyeshadow comes in powder, cream, and liquid variants.

● Mascara and liquid eyeliners: 3 months
● Cream eye shadows: 6 months
● Pencil eyeliners and powder eyeshadows: 2 years

Note: Using eye makeup any longer than the given timeline might lead to severe eye infections.

2. Lip Makeup
Lip makeup includes lipsticks, lip gloss, and lip liner.

● Lipsticks and lip gloss: 1 to 2 years.
● Lipliner: 2 years and above.

Note: Using expired lipsticks can lead to dryness, itching, and bacterial infections around the mouth.

3. Face Makeup
Face makeup includes foundation, primer, highlighter, blusher, bronzer, and concealer. Powder, cream, and liquid are different variants of face makeup.

● Concealer (cream or liquid): 2 years.
● Liquid Foundation: 18 months.
● Powdered Foundation: 2 years.
● Highlighter, blusher, and bronzer (cream or liquid): 1 year.
● Highlighter, blusher, and bronzer (powder based): 2 to 3 years.
● Primer: up to 2 years.

Note: Use of expired face makeup will lead to irritation and acne and will also lead to skin infections.

4. Nail Polish
Nail polish and gel nail polish both have an expiry date if opened. Unopened bottles can last forever. So, ensure that you open a bottle only if you use it.

● Nail Polish: 1 to 2 years
● Nail polish gel: 2 to 3 years

Note: Expired nail polish becomes gooey and dry, which makes its application difficult.

Bonus Tips

● You should toss your sunscreen after six months.
● Perfumes also expire and should be changed every 2 to 3 years.
● You should replace even natural cosmetic products after two years of use.
● Surprisingly, even your makeup brushes need to be changed. Once the brushes start losing their bristles or aren’t helping with the application as before, it’s time to replace them.

Bottom Line

One defining feature of those who are into beauty is their love of collecting makeup. However, there isn’t much that you can apply to your face at once. Reusing the leftover cosmetics may already be too late because they will sit idle on the table.

We suggest you regularly check the expiry date and ensure that you frequently wash your makeup brushes with lukewarm water and pat them dry with a clean cloth.

Until next time,
Vivien Kondor Team
